Maintaining your privacy on the Web

Some Web sites that you visit might gather, use, and share your personal information, such as your e-mail address. If you're concerned that this information might be misused, you should keep your personal information as private as possible.

Most sites can only gather information that is personally identifiable with you, like your e-mail address or telephone number, if you give it to them. If a Web site asks for this information, use good judgment. You might consider giving your e-mail address when signing up for a mailing list, but few sites have a legitimate need to ask for your social security number and mother's maiden name.

Fortunately, you control your personal information. Many Web sites provide privacy statements about how they collect and use such information. Be sure to look for and read these statements.
